Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of heavy mobile and stationary equipment used in a steel mill environment. This role supports mill operations by ensuring equipment reliability, operational safety, and compliance with company and regulatory standards. The Technician will work on large, off‑road and industrial equipment under demanding conditions where safety, precision, and uptime are critical.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on heavy industrial equipment including wheel loaders, dozers, excavators, cranes, locomotives, material handlers, and support equipment
- Inspect mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain systems to identify failures or performance issues
- Repair or replace engines, transmissions, braking systems, hydraulic components, and electrical systems in accordance with OEM specifications
- Utilize technical manuals, schematics, drawings, and service bulletins to perform accurate repairs and modifications
- Conduct equipment inspections and document maintenance activities in accordance with company procedures
- Work safely in active steel‑mill operations, including high‑temperature zones, outdoor environments, and around mobile equipment
- Comply with all Harsco Environmental, OSHA, MSHA (if applicable), and site‑specific safety regulations
- Participate in safety meetings, job safety analyses (JSAs), and continuous improvement initiatives
- Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to minimize equipment downtime
- Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication repairs as required (preferred)
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred
- Minimum 3+ years of experience maintaining heavy equipment in an industrial, mining, steel‑mill, or construction environment
- Strong mechanical aptitude with hands‑on experience in:
- Diesel and gasoline engines
- Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Electrical and electronic controls
- Drivetrains and braking systems
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a fast‑paced industrial environment
- Proven commitment to workplace safety and hazard awareness
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documentation and OEM service procedures
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation
- Tolerance for noise, dust, vibration, high heat, and industrial work conditions
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and work around moving equipment
Preferred Qualifications
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience working within active steel‑mill operations
- Familiarity with slag handling, materials handling, or rail‑based industrial equipment
- Certifications in heavy equipment repair, hydraulics, or electrical systems
